Kevin and Matthew have long held a fascination and love for the Super 8 film format. It was developed in 1965 and after almost 20 years of success, it saw its popularity decline in the early 80’s when videotape technology, quality and cost improved. In the last few years, though, there has been renewed interest in Super 8 film among professional and amateur filmmakers alike.
Below are a few camera tests Kevin shot in early 2007. As part of a plan to shoot a short subject on Super 8, he filmed one roll each on three of the cameras from his collection to determine which camera would serve him best. The stock used was Kodak Tri-X B&W Reversal (7266) and the cameras used were a Zenit Quarz 1x8S-2 (lens 1.8/9-38), Chinon 12 SMR Pacific (lens 1.8/6-72) and Bauer S 209 XL (lens 1.2/6-51). All rolls were shot on the same overcast winter day.
